Galoshes

For those who know nothing of galoshes and think, perhaps the reference is to a new drink that comes with the optional two olives or an onion, this notion would be wrong, galoshes are a type of snow boot that fit over the shoes. Just saying the word ‘galoshes’ makes me laugh. Say it out loud: galoshes. Do visions of overdressed young boys with tongues stuck to the flagpole in winter come to mind? Do fantasies of country folk donning Saturday night finery come to mind? “I wore my best galoshes to the barn dance, yup yup yup” and still went home alone?

When the big box arrived, Scott opened it with great enthusiasm while I watched with learned trepidation. One never knows what treasures the mail brings these days. When he pulled out the galoshes, visions of Dr. Frankenstein’s monster’s footwear came to mind. I wondered if the galoshes started it all. Women are nothing if not about shoes. The good doctor may have pulled out a pair of hunky galoshes, presented them to his fashionista wife, who promptly screamed and asked if she could trade them for a pair of Jimmy Choo heels. Disheartened, he wondered what he could do with the galoshes . . . and the rest is history. After I was handed my pair, I quietly accepted that we are now officially 'country folk'. We wear galoshes. Oliver and Lisa owned galoshes and now so do we. Personally, I think galoshes are the height of sloth. The ad should read “for those people who are too lazy to take off their shoes and slip into warm and comfy L.L. Bean winter boots, galoshes are made for you. Just step in and walk out.”

  1. Oh ye of little remembrances! Among childhood's greatest sounds are the loose buckles of galoshes raking against one another while walking flap-flap-thud-thud across the porch.
